Profile

The town of Lamut is a 4th class municipality of Ifugao Province. It is actually the gateway to the province being the first town to be reached upon entering Ifugao coming either from Manila or Baguio. It is bounded on the north by the town of Kiangan, on the east by Lagawe, on the south by the town of Bagabag in the province of Nueva Vizcaya, and on the west by Asipulo municipality. Terrain is characterized by rolling hills and high mountains. There are several small rivers and creeks which cascades from the mountains towards Ibulao River or Magat River.

Lamut is 27 kilometers away from the Capital town of Lagawe. The people are mostly Ifugaos who have migrated from the older towns of Ifugao namely Kiangan, Lagawe, Banaue, and Mayoyao. As a matter of fact, many families have roots in barangays Ducligan of Banaue and Ayangan of Mayoyao. There are some Ilocanos who migrated from Nueva Viscaya and from the Ilocos Region. Its first mayor was Guinid Tuguinay.

The town is home to the Ifugao State College of Agriculture and Forestry which have its main campus in Barangay Nayon. It is also the home of the Provincial Science High School which is located in Barangay Lawig. There are two banking institutions in the town: the branch of Rural bank of Bagabag and the local credit cooperative LAGSADECO. Market day is Sunday when residents from the barrios and traders from other towns would converge in the local public market.

Agriculture is the main economic activity with rice and corn as the primary products. Backyard raising of poultry and livestock is an additional source of income. Cottage industries produce furniture, baskets, and other handicrafts.

Lamut is composed of 18 barangays namely: Ambasa, Bimpal, Hapid, Jolowon, Lawig, Lucban, Mabatobato, Magulon, Nayon, Panopdopan, Payawon, Pieza, Poblacion East, Poblacion west, Pugol, Salamague, Sanafe, and Umilag.

Business Opportunities

The production of high value commercial crops and processing thereof is a priority investment area of the municipality. Real estate prices is increasing rapidly in this town which should encourage investors to come in by putting up commercial buildings. At present, there is practically no tourist facilities. The town is an ideal location of an eco-tourism park or a demonstration farm with lodging and recreational facilities.
