Kalayaan is located within the Spratly's group of islets in the South China Sea, around 514 kilometers west of Palawan Island.
The municipality was created by former President Ferdinand Marcos by virtue of Presidential Decree No.1596 to further the Philippine's claim over the
the islands.It has a total land area of less than one square kilometers. It is the smallest municipality in terms of area and population.
